About us
The Heap family have been involved with the conservation of the Eurasian
otter since the mid 1970's, eventually creating a home for a pair of Asian
short claw otters at their home in Derbyshire. Kizzie and Ferdie started a
life long passion for otters and completely changed the direction of our lives.
Over the years this passion extended to include other indigenous species
including pine martens, polecats, minks, stoats, badgers, red foxes, northern lynx, Scottish wildcats, hedgehogs, wallabies, wild boar and deer.
The New Forest Wildlife Park continues to be committed to the conservation of otters world wide
and supports both, financially and with staff, Diane McTurk with her
rehabilitation of the South American Giant Otter at her home at Karanambu
Guyana www.karanambu.com.
In the UK each year we take in many orphaned and abandoned otter cubs and
injured adult otters. Working closely with the RSPCA, local county Wildlife
Trusts etc we care for these animals and return them to the wild. In the
last 12 months we have had over 15 otters brought to us for care. Over the
years we have cared for many other species of wildlife including deer,
badgers, polecats, foxes, owls and birds of prey.
All of us at the centre consider it a privilege to be able to help these
amazing creatures.
